The Whitehead/Cleary Home
276 West King Street
This George Eberly house is an 11 room weather boarded yellow-pine log structure. It is located on Lot 48 of the town lots originally divided by Peter Stover from the part of a tract of 438 acres that he purchased from Jacob Funk in 1749. The property had several owners until it was bought by Jeremiah Eberly in 1812 and remained in the Eberly family for over 100 years. The 1779 deed from Stover to the house's first owner, George Voegdley, required Voegdley to build on the lot "one good Dwelling house with a stone or brick chimney" within a year.
The construction of the two-story rear section appears to date from this time period. It has a massive central stone chimney with very large, back-to-back stone fireplaces opening into its two ground floor rooms. The larger front section of the house was built at a later date, likely early in the 1800's. It has two additional stone fireplaces and original flooring, woodwork and doors in many rooms.
During the mid-1900s parts of the house were used as rental apartments. Partitions and other modifications from this time have been removed, revealing a third stone fireplace on the second floor in the older section of the house.
Owners Jim Whitehead and Sheila Cleary purchased the home in 2007 and completed restoration in 2010. The home's rooms are large and bright and Jim and Sheila have lovingly furnished them with antiques and family pieces. They were pleased to share their re-creation of the 19th Century home.
